Caitanya-caritamrta Changes — Full List

A complete comparison of the 1975 original edition of Srila Prabhupada’s Sri Caitanya-caritamrta with the new ISKCON/BBT revised edition highlighting all the changes.

All changes are highlighted in the following pages. This comparison is based on the original & revised versions as they are presented in the Bhaktivedanta Archives Folio. We have not yet verified if the original and revised Cc’s in the folio are exactily the same as the printed books or not.

UPDATE (December 6, 2014)

The “Original Caitanya-caritamrta” as found in the Bhaktivedanta Archives Folio 2003 on close inspection includes many changes, it is not really the original Caitanya-caritamrta. So we have updated this comparison using a verified version of Srila Prabhupada’s original 1975 Sri Caiatnya-caritamrta. While we can not guarantee everything completely 100% it is much closer to the original printed books than what we had before.

We have also done a comparison from the Caitanya-caritamrta found in the Bhaktivedanta Archives 2003 Vedabase [which is hopefully close to the current 9 Volume Bhaktivedanta Book Trust printed Sri Caitanya-caritamrta] and the version of Caitanya-caritamrta found in the 2014.1 Vedabase. From this you can see that the BBT are constantly editing Prabhupada’s books and the next printing of Caitanya-caritamrta will again be different.

  1. Hare Krishna!
Wonderful work, but madhya 1, revised file is missing, its not opening, and the same goes for antya 20. Would be nice if they could be downloaded in one archive.

Thank you very much for this work!

  2. PAMHO,GSPP N SGM, Can you tell me please HOW MANY REVISED COPIES IS IN ACTUAL CIRCULATION AND WHAT HAS BEEN DONE BY ISKCON TO RECUPERATE THOSE BOOKS SUCH AS B/GITA S IT IS.

Why BBT has undertaken such steps and how GBC has rectified these mistakes.haribol

All Bhagavad-gitas ISKCON has printed since 1983 are full of thousands of unauthorized changes.

All Krsna Books printed by ISKCON since the mid to late 80′s are full of thousands of unauthorized changes.

All Caitanya-caritamrta’s ISKCON has printed since the mid 90′s are full of unauthorized changes.

ISKCON has done absolutely nothing at all to rectify these problems. Rather they are encouraging the BBT to change Prabhuapda’s books more and more and more.

It seems that ISKCON want to destroy the authority in Prabhupada’s books by making unlimited unauthorized changes to them. They are not stopping the changing of Prabhuapda’s books but changing more and more and more…

Fortunately you can read Prabhupada’s original books online at http://www.PrabhupadaBooks.com and purchase the original books at http://www.KrishnaStore.com

  3. Dear Madhudvisa dasaji, thank you very much for this detailed side by side comparison of the changes to Caitanya Caritamrita on this site.
As per the request of the above user, and also to save on bandwidth, i have uploaded all the htm files into a single archive, that is supercompressed to 5MB, and when extracted it becomes 90MB.
So, users interested can download this small file, and extracts the contents to a folder and go thru the files in their leisure.
This will particularly be useful to those seekers who have a slow internet connection.

So far the BBT has not changed Srila Prabhupada’s Srimad-Bhagavatam. So the first 12 volumes of the 18 volume set is Prabhuapda’s pre-1978 Bhagavatam. But the final six volumes of that 18 volume set are not by Srila Prabhupada, they are “Bhaktivedanta Purports” by Hriydananda. To put this with Prabhupada’s Bhagvavatam is a great crime. Hriydananda is so far away from Srila Prabhupada’s level of spiritual realization. Honestly he has no taste whatsoever for chanting Hare Krishna or anything connected with Krishna consciousness. He is not a pure devotee of Krishna, he does not understand Krishna himself and he is not at all qualified to write “Bhaktivedanta Purports…”

So the BBT Bhagavatam set is alright if you only ever read the first 12 volumes by Srila Prabhupada, but if you are unfortunate enough to read the final six volumes then that will be very dangerous for your spiritual life.

Hearing from a pure devotee and hearing from someone who is not a pure devotee is a very different thing and has very different results…

      1. Hari Bol Madhudvisa Prabhu,

        PAMHO! AGTSP!

Thank you for confirming about Srimad Bhagavatam. It is really unfortunate that BBT has discontinued the 30 books Bhagavatam Set, and their new Bhagvatam set comes with all those traslated 6 volume too. 🙁

Do you have any reference from India if anyone is still having the stock for 30 Books Srimad Bhagavatam set?

        Thank you! Hari Bol 🙂

        1. Hare Krishna Gopal

We have it at KrishnaStore.com, but in the US and in Australia, but not in India. It would be VERY expensive to send it to India unfortunately.

You should put pressure on the Indian BBT to reprint the 30 volume Prabhupada Bhagavatam set…

  6. hare krsna prabhu

can you please tell me that 30 volume srimad bhagavatam first canto 3rd volume is yellow colour.

  7. Hare Krishna Prabhu , u are a real godsend. I live in India so how can i find the original Bhagwatam as i cant find the 30 book set ?

    1. Hare Krishna Saurabh

Unfortunately the 30 Volume SB set is now no longer printed by BBT. We still have some stock in the US but when that is finished it is not available any more. However the BBT’s 44 [or whatever it is…] volume small set at least is still Prabhupada’s original Bhagavatam but you would have to throw away or something the extra books with ‘Bhaktivedanta Purports’ by the rascal Hriydananda… It would be very unfortunate for anyone if they happened to read these purports. It just flows on from the real Bhaktivedanta Purports by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to these bogus rascal imitation ‘bhaktivedanta purports’ by Hriydananda. And ISKCON would preach to you that “It is all non-different, it is all one, there is no difference between Srila Prabhupada and Hriydananda…” But of course this is a lie…..

Anyhow, at least the small BBT set, up to Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 10 Chapter 13, it should be Prabhupada’s original Bhagavatam…

You just have to throw away the rest of the books…

  8. HARE KRISHNA Prabhu
    PAMHO AGTSP

I’ve gone through all the pages above mentioned, but I’ve not found some major change except in Madhya Lila Chapter 7 Text 130.
So is there are any actual changes that everyone is talking about? or its just a well-known issue.

    YS

    1. Hare Krishna Aman

There are less changes in the Caitanya-caritamrta than Bhagavad-gita. But they are making a new, more changed, version of Caitanya-caritamrta. Still there are many very important changes already in Caitanya-caritamrta and many more in the next edition that has not yet been printed. That is the way the BBT work. They change gradually. Every time they print the books are a little different. So over a period of some years it will come out that the books they are printing have very little to do with the original books Srila Prabhupada printed.

If you want to see clearer changes check out the Bhagavad-gita As It Is changes. Or the Perfect Questions Perfect Answers changes.

In the Cc you will see a big change related to the guru issue on page 1. And there are many big changes throughout the book. But overall there is a lot less changed in the second editon of Cc than the Gita. But they have a third edition of Cc coming with much more changes. And then there will be a fourth edition, fifth edition, sixth edition, seventh edition. They will keep on changing and changing and changing. This is the American disease. They have to constantly change. That is their way. And this change destroys the authority of Prabhupada’s books. That is the point. If you change the authority is lost. So currently, because they are full of unauthorized changes, there is no authority in the books being printed by the BBT.

  9. Haribol Madhuvisa prabhu, could you please explain why reading the purports of Hrdayananda is dangerous for one’s spiritual life, as you stated. Of course, we know he is not on the level of Srila Prabhupada, in terms of devotion and realization, but from that one would just conclude there is not as much benefit as reading from Prabhupada, but not actually dangerous.

    1. Hare Krishna Niscala dd

Krishna consciousness is confidential. Krishna only reveals himself to His pure devotees. So we know very certainly that Hrdayananda is not a pure devotee of Krishna. As I lived in Los Angeles for a long time I know him and had some association with him. At the time I was associated with him he did not chant Hare Krishna, did not shave his head, did not wear devotional clothing, did not wear tilak, did not carry japa beads. It was quite strange, Nrsimhananda Prabhu invited him one day to come to Pyramid House for a ‘japa walk’. So he came and we spent time with him. But he did not come with japa beads or tilak or devotional clothes. In the whole time he did not speak a single word about Krishna. And when we went with him on the japa walk in the state forest there he did not chant Hare Krishna. He was the most non-Krishna conscious person you could ever imagine meeting.

And you know he recommends that ISKCON should start performing homosexual marriages. And, if you have read the Bhagavatam, you will know that very clearly, according to the opinion of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the homosexual tendency is demonic. And if you have read Prabhupada’s books and heard his classes Srila Prabhupada considers this homosexual tendency demonic. And it is illicit sex. Prabhupada severely criticizes Christian priests who perform homosexual marriage ceremonies for example.

So Hrdayananda does not accept the conclusions of the Bhagavatam, he has his own different ideas, he does not accept the authority of Srila Prabhupada. He thinks himself more intelligent than Srila Prabhupada, and he has even written this actually.

So from all angles of vision, if we consider the authority of Srimad-Bhagavatam and Srila Prabhupada, Hrdayananda is demonic.

Again if you have read Srila Prabhupada’s books you will be familiar with the concept that milk touched by the lips of a serpent is poisonous. The idea is that milk is very wholesome and nutritious. But if a snake has been drinking that milk while the snake drinks the milk he mixes he poisonous venom with the milk. And if you were to drink that milk after the snake had been drinking it you would die, you would be poisoned by the venom of the snake in the milk.

This example is given by Srila Rupa Gosvami in regard to hearing Krishna Katha from the lips of non-devotees. You may say that Bhagavad-gita or Srimad-Bhagavatam is very nice and pure. So it does not matter who we hear it from. But Srila Rupa Gosvami says No. MILK TOUCHED BY THE LIPS OF A SERPENT BECOMES POISONOUS.

So if someone is not a devotee and he speaks on Srimad-Bhagavatam, even if he is a great scholar and technically speaking says the correct things, the effect on the audience will be they will become non-devotees.

Spiritual knowledge can only be understood and distributed by a pure devotee of Krishna. If a non-devotee or, in the case of Hrdayananda, a demon, tries to do this then the milk becomes poisoned by the touch of the serpent.

So be very careful only to read Vaisnava literature that has been translated by and commented on by a pure devotee of Krishna. Otherwise you will drink the poison and your spiritual life will be killed.

ISKCON are VERY CRIMINAL in this regard. They do not even put Hrdayananda’s name on the Bhagavatam. They imply it is Prabhupada’s Bhagavatam but they KNOWINGLY mix in this poison thus knowingly destroying the spiritual lives of so many innocent devotees…

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!
